Cucinella Weekly Wrap Up #2

Week of September 2, 2024

This week marked the completion of our sixth day of the new school year! Though it was a short week due to Labor Day on Monday, it was a busy one as we returned on Tuesday for four days of learning.

On Tuesday, our Preschool and Kindergarten students gathered with Mr. Perruso and Mr. O'Connor for a special assembly to introduce the school’s new "Bucket Filling" initiative. The excitement in the room was palpable as our youngest learners listened attentively, eager to understand how they can help "fill buckets" with kindness, respect, and positive actions throughout the school year.

We were incredibly impressed by how well-behaved and engaged the students were during the assembly. They sat quietly, eyes wide with curiosity, and showed such wonderful listening skills—an amazing start to their journey of being respectful, kind-hearted members of our school community.

It’s clear that our little ones are already off to a fantastic start, and we can't wait to see how much they’ll grow—both in their understanding of "bucket filling" and in their overall development—over the course of the year!

On Friday, we warmly welcomed our new Kindergarten parents to the PTO-sponsored "Boohoo, Yahoo!" event in the cafeteria. It was a wonderful morning filled with conversation, as parents had the chance to connect, share stories, and bond over the joys (and maybe a few tears!) of sending their little ones off to school for the first time. The event provided a supportive space for parents to reflect on the first week of Kindergarten, whether they were feeling the bittersweet emotions of the "boohoo" or the excitement of the "yahoo."

A big thank you goes to our amazing PTO co-presidents for organizing and hosting this special gathering. Their efforts helped create a sense of community and support for our Kindergarten families as they embark on this new adventure!

Our students are starting to settle into their new routines, and it's wonderful to see their confidence grow as the year gets rolling. With our first full week up ahead of us, we're excited to dive even deeper into learning and growth now that the year is in full swing!

Wishing you a wonderful week ahead,

Christopher Perruso

Principal

Updated Curriculum

Eureka Math 2🧮

The Washington Township School District recently adopted the Eureka 2 math program across all of our elementary schools. Here is some information about the program and how it will benefit our mathematics instruction.

The following information is from: https://greatminds.org/math/eurekamathsquared/family-engagement

Eureka Math²® is your student’s revolutionary new math program. Its learning design allows your student to build a deep conceptual understanding of mathematics that will better prepare them for college, career, and beyond.

At Great Minds, we receive many questions from parents asking why their child needs to learn more conceptual math and multiple strategies for solving problems. Some parents suggest that simply learning the traditional method for solving a math problem (e.g., 2 + 2 = 4 or 6 × 8 = 48) is enough. We agree that students need to learn traditional methods for computation. Often, they’re the best tool for the job.

However, sometimes students need more options—they need more tools in their toolbox. If students learn multiple math strategies, not only can they solve more kinds of problems more efficiently, but they also gain a deeper understanding of mathematics and how to use it in daily life.

Structured Literacy📖

The state of New Jersey has revised its English Language Arts Standards and mandated them to be implemented in NJ school districts in the beginning of the 2024 school year. Amongst these changes are the addition of the foundational Reading Standards. The revisions include clarifying and bolstering critical expectations in K-5 critical Reading skills. These foundational skills are known as Structured Literacy. Structured Literacy is a teaching method for oral and written language that focuses on the systematic and explicit instruction of literacy components. The Washington Township district has provided our K-5 ELA educators with a K-5 Structured Literacy Handbook to be able to implement these changes.  Fortunately, our teachers have been receiving Professional Development on the explicit teaching of these foundational skills for many years. Our ELA educators will continue to deliver these systematic and explicit lessons with fidelity so our students can enjoy a lifetime of literacy.

Pick Up Patrol- Our Student Absence and Dismissal System

PickUp Patrol - USED FOR RECORDING ABSENCES and DISMISSAL Preferences

PickUp Patrol has been in effect for 2 years now and we are very happy with the positive feedback we have been receiving from the community regarding it's ease of use. . Please click here to review how to use the program to record absences.

Our secretaries are no longer checking phone messages for absences or changes in dismissal procedures. This information is now handled exclusively through the PickUp Patrol app.

All of our parents and guardians should have received a "Welcome" email with details on how to download the app and set up your account. If you have not received an email, please check your SPAM folder. If you can not find the Welcome email, please contact our school secretaries and ask for a new one to be resent.

If you have not downloaded the app or set up your account yet, please do so as soon as possible.

If you have any questions, please feel free to contact the secretaries, Mrs. Deanna Dargel or Mrs. Boomi Varathrajan.
