FKS families,
Washington Township Schools are excited to embark on the first annual elementary school book club called One School, One Book. One School, One Book is a great program in which children of all grade levels will be listening to the same book. Research has shown that reading to children beyond their reading level is beneficial. We have selected a title that can be followed, understood, and enjoyed by younger students, while captivating, stimulating, and entertaining older students.
The “kick-off” for this project was held today introducing the program and the book. Each student should come home today with a copy of the book A Boy Called BAT by Elana K. Arnold and a reading schedule. Families will be asked to read the story together at home during the next few weeks, approximately 15 minutes per night.
Our goal is to build a Community of Readers at our schools! Reading aloud at home with your child is a valuable interaction, as it encourages our children to become engaged readers while fostering a special family bonding experience. Everyone including students, parents, teachers, and administrators will be following the same reading schedule.
In school, students will explore the book through activities and discussion. Please be sure your family is on track with the reading schedule so that your child can participate in all of the fun activities. You will quickly find your child’s enthusiasm in participation and pride in knowing and anticipating the details of the story. We also request keeping to the reading schedule by curbing your enthusiasm to read ahead. Throughout the program, everyone will be excited and talking about BAT!
We look forward to talking with both you and your child during the next few weeks about the recent events of A Boy Called BAT. With your help, we are building a true Community of Readers in Long Valley.
Sincerely,
Your Principal, Dr. Christopher Marangon
Your Assistant Principal, Mr. John Winsted
