Carter G. Woodson: 1875-1950
the Father of Black History
“No man knows what he can do until he tries.”
History is a story. For a long time, history mainly focused on the achievements of kings, queens, and powerful leaders. In the 18th and 19th centuries, historians began using a more scientific approach, studying evidence to make history more accurate.
Black History Month is a time to remember the struggles and achievements of African Americans in all areas of life, from science and the arts to politics and civil rights. It helps all Americans gain a fuller understanding of history and the role African Americans have played in shaping the country.
Black history is American history.
Throughout the month, our school will recognize the importance of Black Americans in the fabric of our nation through activities relating to the curricula in various content areas.
The theme for Black History Month 2025, “African Americans and Labor,” highlights the significant and multifaceted connections between work and the experiences of Black Americans. This theme aims to inspire deep reflections on how labor, in its many forms, has shaped Black history, culture, and workplaces throughout different eras and across the United States. It also recognizes key events, themes, and contributions that have defined the role of African Americans in the workforce. The LVMS Library is showcasing the contributions of African Americans in the various work spaces. Please visit the LVMS Library or CLICK HERE to see some suggested selections that are available for checkout.
